Monmouth University
Immediate Administrative Opening. Director of Turf Management and Landscaping.
Full-time
Reports to the Vice President for Administrative Services.
Primary Responsibilities : Plan, organize, coordinate and supervise the proper care of all athletics fields and University property, including ornamental shrubs and formal gardens, to ensure that all University facilities are maintained at the highest possible level. Instruct and direct grounds crew in proper methods and techniques including, but not limited to, herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, trimming and pruning to ensure that all University property is maintained at the highest level possible. Ensure that athletics fields are prepared for each event. Diagnose and correct turf problems such as diseases, insects, weeds, soil compaction and soil infertility and correct problems. Oversee special landscape projects from design to installation, including irrigation. Oversee removal of ice, snow, etc. to ensure that all campus sidewalks, steps and roads are safe for travel. Manage and ensure all sidewalks and roadways are safe, passable and clean. Prepare specifications for all grounds related projects and ensure that they are followed. Ensure that all work is performed within established state and federal guidelines. Develop and maintain appropriate department budgets. Supervise Grounds Supervisors, Groundskeepers, Student Employees and Seasonal Help. Organize all work schedules for grounds, including flower installation, fertilization and watering of all annuals, seasonal plants, specimen and trees to ensure they are properly maintained. Select and purchase all necessary supplies and equipment. Review job performance of employees. Other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate must have a two year degree in Horticulture or Sports Turf Management; Bachelor’s Degree preferred. A minimum of five years related experience is required, preferably at a Division 1 school or higher rated athletic league. Must have working knowledge of turf grass management, including plant anatomy, physiology, and soil physic. Pesticide Applicators License is required. Must be able to lift a minimum of 60 pounds. Experience working in a unionized environment a must. Must have and maintain a valid Automobile Driver’s License in your state of principle residence. Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment and to work in extreme weather conditions required. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are required.
