APPA's Supervisor’s Toolkit Program to be offered in Halifax |

In addition to our regular ERAPPA Annual Meeting, which runs Sunday, October 2, through Wednesday, October 5, 2011 — we are pleased to offer APPA’s Supervisor’s Toolkit Program starting Friday, September 30, and continuing through Tuesday, October 4. Toolkit participants will be able to take advantage of the exhibit hall and many of the entertainment activities that will occur as part of the full conference, including the Monday night event (tickets must be purchased) and the Tuesday night banquet (included in the registration fee). A delayed start on Monday and Tuesday mornings will also allow time for Toolkit participants to attend the keynote and plenary speaker sessions.

Our Northern New England Chapter (Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont) has remained strong and active in economic times that gave all of us plenty to worry about. We are fortunate to continually attract good attendance numbers to our twice a year educational conferences. Thanks to a supportive Business Partner group who remain integral to our Spring and Fall Meetings, programs and speakers, along with everything else that goes into our chapter meetings remain high quality.

Spotlight On ... Phillips Exeter Academy |

Phillips Exeter Academy was founded in 1781 by Dr. John Phillips, a graduate of Harvard and resident of Exeter, NH. As private secondary school of 1000+ students in grades nine through twelve, plus a post graduate year, it boards 81% of its students in 25 dorms. The remaining students are day students. Our academically advanced students come from 47 states, the District of Columbia, plus 36 foreign countries. The beautiful campus is set within a quaint and friendly New England town, in the Seacoast region of New Hampshire.
Most ERAPPA members come from college and university campuses. Although the Phillips Exeter campus has many similarities to a college or university campus, there are also things that make us unique:

OAPPA typically meets 3 times a year for half a day. There is also a 1 day Annual meeting, which is held during the Annual Conference normally scheduled near the end of May. The Quarterly Meetings are typically held at York University in Toronto. The Annual Conference is hosted by a different university each year.
Our 2011 Conference was held at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario from May 31st to June 3rd. The theme for this conference was “Seeing 2020: A Vision for the Future”. The following topics were discussed:

The University of Waterloo, located at the heart of Canada’s Technology Triangle, is one of Canada’s leading comprehensive universities. We’re home to 30,000 full and part-time undergraduate and graduate students who are dedicated to making the future better and brighter. Waterloo, known for the largest post-secondary co-operative education program of its kind in the world, supports enterprising partnerships in learning, research and discovery.
We are made up of six faculties, four federated and affiliated colleges and nine faculty based schools. For 19 years in a row, Waterloo has been named Canada’s most innovative university in the Maclean’s annual university reputational rankings. Waterloo also topped the Most Likely to Produce the Leaders of Tomorrow category in 13 of the last 19 years, and was named Best Overall in 17 of 19 years — including in 2010 in all three categories.

Preventive Maintenance Pays Off |

In tough budget environments, unfortunately, preventive maintenance is often the first to get postponed because it is not fueled by an obvious or visible need to react. The immediate and urgent corrective or emergency maintenance work overtakes performing the proactive work. But, how does that impact the overall cost of maintenance or the overall cost of stewardship of the investment in the school or college facility?
