By Steve Peary, ERAPPA's I&R Rep to APPA

Just as NNECERAPPA and ERAPPA each have a Technology and Communications Committee, APPA International also has a corresponding committee called the Information and Research Committee (I&R).

I&R is a permanent committee of APPA as established in its bylaws and is comprised of association members whose work supports the specific mission and scope of that committee. Members become part I&R through appointments made by the APPA President with the recommendation of the committee chairperson and the regional president.

I&R has a key role in fostering the growth and dissemination of the collective body of knowledge that elevates the role of educational facility professionals. This body of knowledge includes research projects, books and publications produced by APPA, Facilities Performance Indicator (FPI) surveys and reports, the APPA website, and Inside APPA e-newsletter.

Since we last reported in April 2011, our Chapter has been quite busy! We hosted our traditional educational programs and then some!

In June, 2011, we held our 11th annual two-day educational program at Rocky Gap in Cumberland, Maryland and had seventy-five members in attendance. Workshop topics included: “Getting to Yes” presented by Bill Johnson with Haley & Aldrich and Norm Young from the University of Hartford; and “Facility Capital Investment Planning” presented by Jim Whittaker from FEA.

In October 2011, we held our Fall Educational Program at Wor-Wic Community College and had over eighty attendees. Workshop topics included: “Geothermal Heating & Cooling Systems” presented by Oleksa Breslawec and Hollis Linehan of AKF, “A Decade of Synthetic In-Filled Turf” presented by Bill Seymour of Gale Associates, and “As Simple as Respect” presented by Nancy Yeroshefsky, MD/DC APPA President and Assistant Director/FM Human Resources at UMCP.

In March, the Chapter hosted a booth at the 2012 National Facilities Management & Technology Expo (NFM&T) in Baltimore, Maryland. As always, this was a great opportunity for the Chapter to promote its local programming, the benefits of APPA membership, and the 2012 ERAPPA Annual Meeting.

On November 14, 2011 a ceremony was held at the National Museum of American Indian (NMAI) in celebration of the museum obtaining “LEED Silver Certification”. NMAI is the first Smithsonian Institution museum to receive LEED certification credentials. In the fall of 2007, OFEO in collaboration with NMAI begin working on the required documents needed to obtain LEED EB. A consultant was hired to help with the process, interpretation of the requirements, credits and associated points. It was then up to the team to make the decision as to whether or not the points were obtainable. The total number of documents that were uploaded for the Green Councils review was in excess of 1,000. LEED has six main categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation & Design Process. Each category has a set of pre-requisites that need to be accomplished prior to the acceptance of any other available points under the main headings. Our goal was to gain at least an existing building certification and we were elated to receive the silver rating from the council.

There are donors, end users, administrators and trustees. There are campus groups tasked with narrowly defined, but wide-reaching goals
