More than 550 people representing 144 institutions and 163 business partner companies convened in Portland, Maine, last month for the 2009 ERAPPA Annual Meeting. The meeting, held October 4-7, was organized around the theme, "Imagine," which encouraged conference speakers and business partners to find imaginative ways of helping institutions.

All rose to the challenge, beginning with two keynote speakers. Jeff Noel of the Disney Institute offered an in-depth look at Disney's Imagineering.  Former Maine Governor Angus King provided insight into the future of energy.  Both of these inspiring speakers challenged attendees to imagine the possibilities in solving the seemingly impossible situations that face facilities planners now and in the future.

"I've enjoyed my time with ERAPPA and have been fortunate to work with tremendous people who consistently raise the bar of the facilities profession, and this Annual Meeting is another excellent example of that," said Woodward.  "2009 will be remembered as a historic year for ERAPPA, as we tried and succeeded with some new educational programming."

A highlight of the annual business meeting was the election of four board members. Terry Pellerin (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) was named President-Elect, Neal Lespasio (Emerson College) was elected Vice President of Chapter Affairs, Dan Gearan (University of Southern Maine) was re-elected Vice President of Technology & Communications, and Lou Dursi (Princeton University) was re-elected Treasurer.  They join ERAPPA President Jim Barbush (Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education), Vice President of Membership Greg Clayton (University of Prince Edward Island), Vice President of Annual Meetings Anne Richards (Carlton University), Secretary Kevin Mann (Salisbury University) and Past President Keith Woodward (Quinnipiac University) to make up the 2009-2010 ERAPPA Board of Directors.

The Awards Banquet topped off the conference with formal recognition of deserving members. ERAPPA awarded the Norman H. Bedell Award to Bob Carter (McMaster University) who served with distinction and exemplifies the leadership qualities of the late Norman H. Bedell. Committee members, host committee chairs, and past chapter presidents received ERAPPA Certificates of Appreciation and Merit. ERAPPA scholarship recipients and APPA award recipients were also acknowledged. The APPA Supervisor's Toolkit program, offered for the first time at the Eastern Region conference, awarded certificates to participants.

Jim Barbush (Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education) assumed the region's presidency at the end of the Annual Meeting. He pointed to ERAPPA 2010, ERAPPA's 60th Annual Meeting to be held in Pittsburgh, Pa., at the Hilton Hotel adjacent to Point State Park.  The conference is scheduled for October 3-6, 2010.

Barbush exhorted attendees to participate in next year's conference, saying, "Our theme is 60 years of "Forging Our Future."  As we celebrate 6 decades of providing facilities-related education, this theme encourages us to take a look at where we have come from, where we are, and where we are going in maintaining and building our facilities.

"As we forge on to Pittsburgh, we are expecting great things to happen this year:

We are expecting ERAPPA 2010 to be unmatched in its location, content, attendance, and unity.

We are expecting ERAPPA 2010 to attract fresh styles of interactive, audience-engaging educational sessions.

We are expecting ERAPPA 2010, located in the Hilton Hotel (symbolizing Conrad Hilton's philosophy of "Be Big: Think Big, Act Big, and Dream Big"), at Point State Park (where two rivers become one), to signal the further development of collaborative relationships in our organization, and to be a pivotal point in time where creativity and change are seen and realized, such that we are thrust from 60 years past into 60 years future, to develop what has never been developed, because we must.  Therefore, I invite you to come to ERAPPA 2010."
