By Robert L. Cornero, Associate Vice President for Campus Planning and Construction

Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of articles designed to highlight various campuses within APPA’s Eastern Region. In doing this, we hope to entertain and educate you about the work environments of your colleagues and provide an opportunity for informal benchmarking.

Monmouth is a private, medium-sized, coeducational, comprehensive University founded in 1933. Enrollment is approximately 5,600 FTE.  Monmouth's campus is a five-minute drive from the Atlantic Ocean in West Long Branch, New Jersey, and is convenient to New York City and Philadelphia. The 156-acre campus features 55 buildings, including historic landmarks and state-of-the-art facilities. Monmouth is known for its small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio.  We are home to the Urban Coast Institute and the Monmouth University Polling Institute, our Men’s Soccer team is ranked in the top 10 nation-wide and our first football player to make it into the NFL, Miles Austin, is having a big year in the big D.

Wilson Hall
Our main administration building, Wilson Hall, a National Historic Landmark, was featured as the mansion for Daddy Warbucks in the 1982 motion picture, “Annie.”  The Guggenheim Cottage, a part of the Monmouth University Library, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Multipurpose Activity Center

We’ve recently completed a 151,000-square-foot, 4000-seat arena (the Multipurpose Activity Center), an outdoor tennis court complex and an addition and renovation to our historic library.  We have a 200-bed residence hall under construction and scheduled for completion this spring.

In the Facilities Management area, we have four directors.  One handles 75 custodians, a 7 member set up team and a 2 man fire/safety shop.  One is responsible for the various grounds crews and the auto shop totaling approximately 19.  One is responsible for the painting, carpentry and locksmith shops (total of 9) and also supports the Campus Planning and Construction department on a part-time basis.  The fourth director, with a total of 13 employees, handles the HVAC mechanics, electrical, plumbing and energy management.  An office staff of five (accounting, payroll, secretarial, work-order management) supports these directors.

Campus Planning and Construction is a separate department of 2 which, along with assistance from its FM director, is responsible for all new construction and major renovations on the campus.  Both Campus Planning and Facilities Management, as well as Mail, Police and Human Resources, report to the Vice President for Administrative Services.

It’s easy to submit your own campus for a “spotlight” article. Follow this link to the Campus Spotlight Form on the ERAPPA Web site. Fill it out or write your answers as a narrative and send it to Cynthia Linz at clinz@jmcoull.com.
