The University of New Brunswick has two main campuses. The principal campus was established in 1785 and is located in Fredericton, the capital of New Brunswick. Its Saint John campus, located in New Brunswick's largest city, was established in 1964. UNB is among the oldest public universities in North America and the oldest English-language University in Canada. Today UNB has more than 11,400 undergraduate and graduate students on its campuses, with our international students originating from greater than 100 countries. Through the generosity of our donors, 60% of all incoming students receive a scholarship. Our students are supported by over 2,500 faculty and staff. UNB is home to more than 75 undergraduate and graduate programs with 14 faculties on the Fredericton and Saint John campuses. UNB's faculty of law ranks among the top five in Canada (Canadian Lawyer Magazine). In fall 2010, UNB Saint John, in partnership with Dalhousie University and the government of New Brunswick, became home to the province's first English-language medical school.
UNB receives more than $51 million in annual research funding, through grants and contracts and has in excess of 60 research centres, institutes, groups and major projects and 15 Canada Research Chairs. Eighty per cent of university research in New Brunswick happens at UNB. Of particular note: • UNB's Planetary Space Science Centre is the only NASA-supported planetary imaging facility in Canada and the UNB MRI Centre is one of the largest and best known material science magnetic resonance imaging labs in the world. • Google Earth uses technology developed by UNB geodesy and geomatics engineering researchers. • UNB's Institute of Biomedical Engineering is a world-renowned research facility in biomedical engineering and one of the oldest solely dedicated to this field.
The University of New Brunswick celebrated the official opening of an architectural gem, The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER in Fredericton, on Oct. 7, 2011. The opening ceremony showcased the building's features as a world-class fitness and wellness facility, as well as its attributes as a performance venue. It also paid tribute to the many donors and builders who made the facility possible, including the lead donor to the project, UNB's Chancellor, Richard J. Currie. UNB's land endowment encompasses more than 8,000 acres of land throughout the province, with most of its property located in the Fredericton and Saint John regions. On the Fredericton campus, Facilities Management, with a staff of 125, take pride in providing the maintenance and stewardship for over 80 buildings and 152 acres of campus properties through our units of: Maintenance, Capital Projects, Administration, and Energy Management. Under the leadership of Energy Management, FM operates a Central Heating Plant supplying steam to not only UNB-Fredericton but also to external clients including Saint Thomas University, the local regional hospital, as well as National Research Council and Provincial Archives buildings located on our campus. The Project Group at Facilities Management in Fredericton has had an active year with $15.6 million in capital construction in the areas of infrastructure renewal, energy projects, and classroom modifications and renewal – including the completion of the total refurbishment and enhancement of the third major auditorium to be renewed in the last two years. A fourth auditorium renewal project is scheduled to begin in 2012. UNB Fredericton's FM has had a vigorous Energy Management program since 1996. The first two phases of the program saw investments of $3.3M resulting in $6.4M cost avoidance to date. The third phase, with a $7M investment, is well underway. FM at UNB Fredericton is active and has Board representation in both ERAPPA and AAPPA, while also participating in educational programing offered through APPA. Through professional stewardship of university buildings, roads, grounds and infrastructure, Facilities Management contributes towards providing an environment supportive of excellence and sustainability at UNB.
