ERAPPA 2011 Wrap Up |
Christine Matheson, Gary Schmeisser and the entire 2011 Host Committee would like to thank all who attended the “ERAPPA 2011 – Sailing to Success” Annual Meeting. University and Business Partner attendees enjoyed the quality of the presentations and educational sessions, the keynote speakers and social networking events. The expertise and variety of the business partners in the Hall of Resources contributed to the success of the conference. The meeting was a huge success because of all the ERAPPA members’ contribution and commitment to professional development and networking. The educational presentations will be made available to all conference registrants for the next 3 months. All registrants will receive an email with the URL, along with a username and password to access the presentations. Photos from the meeting and social events have been posted on the ERAPPA 2011 website (http://www.confersense.ca/erappa2011/index.htm). Again, many thanks to everyone who helped make ERAPPA 2011 such a sailing success. We hope you enjoyed our Nova Scotia hospitality and look forward to seeing you next year in Philadelphia.

New Jersey Chapter Update |
By Mark Showers, Chapter President
The past year has been a busy one for NJAPPA. Thanks to a very active Board and to the support of a fantastic group of Business Partners we have been able to expand the educational mission of the chapter.
Rutgers University’s deep commitment to recycling and reuse was on display as they hosted NJAPPA’s Zero Waste Summit on February 15. Many of the different methods for diverting materials from landfills were presented including Kevin Lyons, PhD who described Rutgers’ Green Purchasing Practices; Sondra Flite of NJDEP who explained the bureau’s goal of diverting 60% of NJ’s waste stream to recycling and Paul Pistono of Waste Management who described their vision and strategic growth in driving sustainability initiatives for their public sector clients.

ERAPPA 2012 - Philadelphia |
Join us in Holding Truths and Pursuing Happiness at ERAPPA 2012. The event will be in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, birthplace of America and home to the beginning of democracy, from September 30th -October 3rd. As host committee, DVAPPA is extremely excited to showcase where we live and what we do. We truly believe that all we do in Higher Ed. Facilities Management is about people; not only who we serve, who are our peers but also who we are. During ERAPPA 2012 Philadelphia and by Holding Truths and Pursuing Happiness, we hope to focus on us, the people who are ERAPPA; how we learn from one another, how we inspire one another and what inside of us drives us to be better and do better. Together we will examine the truths and ethics in FM as well as the satisfaction and happiness of not only our customers but ourselves. With Keynote Speaker, Stephen M. R. Covey, author of The Speed of Trust and plenary speaker Marci Shimoff, author of Happiness for No Reason, ERAPPA 2012 is truly ntbm (not to be missed). The hotel by itself is something special. A1932 art deco corporate banking office building converted to a hotel in 2001, the Loews Philadelphia, is centrally located and walking distance to all the historic sites, as well as the many restaurants and cultural gems, the city has to offer. Speaking of gems, our Monday night event will take place at The Franklin, which is not only one of the oldest centers of scientific education and development but also houses the Benjamin Franklin, (a scientist and statesman and one of Philly’s favorite sons) National Memorial. Ben Franklin once said, “A long life may not be good enough, but a good life is long enough." Join us in learning with friends and hopefully having long and good lives, while we Hold Truths and Pursue Happiness at ERAPPA 2012, Philadelphia. Visit our website, www.erappa2012.org and keep looking for e-post cards.

Slate Roof Evaluations and Design Considerations |
By Christopher Musorofiti
Slate has been used in the United States since the 1600s, produced first from imported rock and, later, from rock quarried in the United States. In the 1930s and ‘40s, use of expensive slate gave way to lower-priced roofing shingle materials, such as asphalt and composite (typically asbestos/cement-based) products. However, a preference for the appearance of slate persisted and many of the alternative roofing products incorporated crushed slate on their surfaces.
